Questionnaire on retaining Newly Qualified Counselling Psychologists (Summer 2011)

We are very grateful for the work of Dr Elena Gil-Rodriguez of Roehampton University for her work on this questionnaire last summer. The first results were discussed by Divisional Committee at the Strategy Meeting in September. Since then Dr Sylvia Dillon, Practice Lead, has being doing a lot of work on the data and interpretation. It can now be viewed here: Newly Qualified Retention Survey – Pilot Study

The Divisional Committee is grateful for the good faith of the respondents, and will continue to work with the findings of the report so that the Division can better serve its newer recruits. Peter Martin (Chair).

DCoP at the 2012 BPS Conference.

DCoP was very present and visible at the BPS Annual Conference in London last week. It started as one entered the "Grand Hall" of the Connaught Rooms where conference-goers were met with a lively DCoP stand displaying what we do. This was staffed almost continuously for three days by our Comms Lead Dr Helen Nicholas often assisted by our CPD Lead Ketan Patel, and by the essay prizewinners Pooja from the Glasgow Caledonian course and Seh from the City University Course. Other helpers were your four chairs at different times. This is just as well because for the first day particularly there were many, many enquirers visiting the stall.

We were also proud to see that the Division was well -represented in the session after the film "Hidden Battles" by Dr Imogen Surgeon Clegg from "Combat Stress". City and the Division were again represented by Dr Joanna Silver when she presented a very worthwhile paper on "The Experiences of Body Dysmorphic Disorder: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis and Photo Elicitation Study". I was fascinated. Yes, it is the same Joanna who is collecting titles and methodology of current PsychD research for the benefit of present students!

Perhaps the highlight of the conference for many of us was the Award of Practitioner of the Year to Dr Barbara Douglas, our vice-chair. This happened at the gala dinner on Thursday evening.

What may be most important about the conference as a whole, , is the growing visibility of who we are and what we do in the Society. We believe that this will help greatly in terms of employability and in respect for our research: these are the strategic goals for 2012-2013. I felt very proud of you all and privileged to serve you. Peter Martin (Chair).

Making Student Research Accessible

04th March 2012: The BPS Division of Counselling Psychology have set up a new project (the deadline for which is the 7th May 2012) to make current student research more accessible and readily available and encourage interaction between students across the country. The aim of this project is to collect and make available to members searchable lists of information of present research being conducted by trainee counselling psychologists. It is hoped that this will be a useful resource in supporting trainees who sometimes find the process of research daunting and isolating. The goal of this project therefore is to encourage communication between trainees, especially around methodologies, reduce isolation and encourage an ethos of academic research.

In order to gather information about student research topics, we have set up a Questback survey that will allow trainees to enter their name, dissertation title, methodology, key words, institution, date of submission and email contact. The link to this is:

https://response.questback.com/britishpsychologicalsociety/traineeproject/

The intention is for this information to then be available to all members to see the research being undertaken across the country, and for those covering similar topics to be encouraged to discuss and support each other throughout the process of research.

If you are a trainee counselling psychologist and would like to take part in this survey, please enter this information that will then be shared on the Division of Counselling Psychology website. The information will be stored for four years to ensure that only current information is avaliable to students. Every year this process will be repeated. The closing date for this survey is May 7th 2012.

Free access to the Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection (PBSC) journals database for BPS members

Dear Division of Counselling Psychology member,

As many of you may already know, the trial arrangement with EBSCO Publishing giving all members free access to the Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection (PBSC) journals database was successful. PBSC currently contains 540 full-text peer-reviewed journals, plus 23 other full-text titles, all indexed and abstracted. Members of all grades, including student members, can now gain unrestricted access to the collection. Many members of the BPS are already finding access to this database hugely beneficial.

The interface with PBSC is via EBSCOhost, an intuitive resource that offers various ways of searching the database - including basic (Google-style) and more advanced options. It is also very simple to create a personalised ‘My EBSCOhost’, which will allow setting preferences, saving search history, bookmarking, creating alerts, and much more.

To access PBSC go to http://www.bps.org.uk/ebsco-sign you will need to enter your membership number and password if not already logged on as a member. From there a link takes you straight to the EBSCOhost search page.

Directory of Voluntary Careers Speakers (DVCS)

The Society is currently updating its Directory of Voluntary Careers Speakers (DVCS) and is looking for Chartered and Graduate members that would like to be included on the list.

The DVCS aims to put teachers, lecturers and career advisors in touch with members of the Society that are willing to visit schools and other institutions to talk about their experience of the discipline. It is hoped that by providing access to our members and their experiences, students will be able to gain a greater insight into working in the field of psychology.

Voluntary Career Speakers will have access to Society career publications and a careers PowerPoint presentation, as well as online resources to keep up to date with the latest information on psychology careers. We do intend to improve the support we provide for members listed on the Directory and are currently in the process of reviewing our careers information. If you have any suggestions for publications, posters etc that you think would be helpful we would appreciate your input. Please use any of the contact details listed below.

The DVCS is currently produced in a printed format; however, we do intend to publish it as a searchable list on the Society’s website. This will mean that any information detailed on the Directory will be available to the public. When this becomes available, members will also be able to update their DVCS profile through the member’s area of the website.

If you would like to become a Voluntary Career Speaker then please download an application form from our website at:

http://www.bps.org.uk/careers/resources

Once you have signed and completed the form please return it to our freepost address:

We would welcome contributions from all of our Chartered and Graduate members, including those who may not work in a psychological setting but find their psychology background useful in their current career.

If you have any questions about the service, please do not hesitate to contact me.
